Starlink in Door County: What to Know Before Installation

If you live out on the peninsula, you already know the internet options can be thin. That's a big reason Starlink has taken off around here — but a lot of people are finding that getting the dish out of the box is the easy part. Getting it installed well is what decides whether you have fast, steady internet or a service that drops out every time the wind blows.

Here's what actually matters, based on what we see in Door County homes.

1. It all comes down to the view of the sky

Starlink needs a clear, wide view of the sky. Tall cedars, maples, and birch that look harmless from the ground can block the signal, especially when they're full of leaves in summer or swaying in a storm. Even a few thin branches in the wrong spot can cause short dropouts that are hard to diagnose later.

The Starlink app includes an obstruction checker, and it's worth using before you pick a spot. Check from where the dish will actually sit, not from the ground.

2. Where you mount it matters more than how fast the plan is

The best location is often not the closest one to the house. A roof mount, a pole, or a spot at the edge of the yard can each make sense depending on your trees and your home. The goal is a spot that stays clear now and after the trees grow another few years.

3. Cable routing and weatherproofing

The cable has to get from the dish to the inside of your house, and that opening needs to be sealed properly. A messy or unsealed cable entry is one of the most common causes of leaks and wear down the road. Cables should be secured and protected from foot traffic, lawn equipment, and snow load.

4. The included router usually isn't the whole answer

The router that comes with Starlink works fine in a small space, but in a larger or older home wifi can drop off quickly a few rooms away. Depending on your kit, you can often connect Starlink to a better router or a mesh system so the whole house gets a solid signal, including the garage, the basement, and the workshop.

5. Do it right once

A rushed install can mean climbing back on the roof later, re-drilling, or moving the dish after trees leaf out. Taking a little extra time up front on placement saves a lot of frustration.

Already bought a kit?

That's very common. If you have a Starlink kit sitting in a box, or one that's installed but not performing the way you expected, we can install it or take a look at what's going wrong.
